CLUB HISTORY

The Club was founded in 1893 by Mr.J.E.Dean, builder and contractor, of Ashton-on-Mersey. Mr Dean's business career was notable for many public works in the Sale and Ashton-on-Mersey area. For example, he was Chairman of the Ashton-on-Mersey urban authority in 1900/01 and for many years he was prominently identified with the public life of Ashton-on-Mersey and the surrounding district.

The site of the bowling green was originally a field where Mr.Dean and his friends used to play cricket. One evening Mr.Dean suggested that they should form a bowling club. He volunteered to build the green if they could find adequate membership and this led to the founding of the club.

The green was laid in 1892 and the club opened in 1893. In 1896 the pavilion and Steward's house were built. The Club was originally called the Ashton-on-Mersey Bowling Club and was changed later to The Linden Club in keeping with the many Linden trees which surround the Club grounds.
